Make Me Weep

I’m alive!!  I have missed Monday Monday and Hump Day Miscellany but consider yourself saved from drivel.  I had nothing to say that couldn’t be said in 12 words or less on FaceCrack.  I admit it – I’m hooked!

So today in email I was directed to  this article

Top Cyclists Can’t Eat Anything They Want…

So maybe I knew the whole “I’m training – pass me a cheeseburger!” thing was a myth but did I need to see it spelled out like this?

“When the Amgen Tour of California pedals around downtown Sacramento and launches off from Davis next week, its 136 cyclists will rely on fine-tuned nutrition to fuel their efforts over the 750-mile trek. The right timing of meals and the right combination of food and drink may mean the difference between a podium finish and a spot back in the pack.”

On the other hand, who’s looking for the podium?  I’m just out for fun!

And what about this:

“What distinguishes the pros from the amateurs is at the elite pro level, these athletes are really tuned in to their needs,” said Dr. Helen Iams, team physician for Fairfield-based Team Jelly Belly. “When the margin between first and fifth is 3 inches, a 1 percent difference in your performance is huge.”

Is it just me or is there a twee bit of a disconnect between talking about great nutrition and being on Team Jelly Belly?  For me 1 serving = 1 huge bag of Jelly Bellys so I’m not getting a whole lot of good nutrition there, am I?  Is there something about the magic bean I have yet to discover?  I don’t think they even make the sport ones anymore because really – $22/pound for jelly beans wasn’t fooling anyone.

“It’s not unusual for a pro cyclist to down the whole box of cereal at breakfast (with fruit and yogurt, too) and four sandwiches for lunch. And unlike athletes in most other sports, cyclists have to eat and drink while in the midst of intense competition. They’re constantly refueling their “engines,” their muscles.”

Okay – now we’re talking!!  THIS is what it’s all about, right?  Think I could fit a 6″ Subway sandwich in my bento box?

Monday Monday – Addictions

I was agonizing over what to write about when lo and behold I was tagged by Misty.  I am supposed to list 5 things I’m addicted to. Addiction is too strong a word (for a recovered co-dependent person like me) but using the word lightly we have:

1)  FaceCrack aka FaceBook – I feel quite compelled to keep up now.

2).  Word games on FB – particularly Scrabble. I love it

3).  My Garmin.  It is totally unreliable while running (my pace will change by 2 minutes/mile every 15 seconds) but I must have it.  The over all picture is always pretty accurate.

4).  My cell phone – I feel very insecure if I realize I have left it at home. As phone booths disappear the anxiety gets worse.

5). Men.  Apparently I can’t learn to live without them and I’m quite determined to find one to call my own in  spite of a lot of empirical evidence to suggest that will never again happen.

So now I tag 5 other people:

Julie, Jeanne, Donald (as punishment for never writing up the Calvin and Hobbes story), DonKaty

Shameless Pandering

I’m doing something ‘for cause’.  The cause is fighting ALS.  ALS is a very nasty disease that takes its victims lives slowly – one digit, one limb, one body part at a time.   Life goes on for months and months but gets harder and harder as the afflicted marches inexorably to his or her death.

I know fundraising is sort of tedious.  I know we all get asked to donate to something over and over and over again and it’s hard –  money is tight.

I am asking for $16.50  in honor of Jon Blais’ 16.5 hour Ironman race, undertaken after he was diagnosed with ALS.

If you’d like to help out just go here  This is a different link than the one I posted yesterday.  Thanks to Bret Buckner for both pointing that out and for contributing to the cause.

Hump Day Miscellany – on Wednesday!

It’s a miracle!  I’m actually getting this written on the correct day.  Must be that spirit of renewal we are all feeling.  We are all feeling it right?  I am!  So without further ado ….

1). Drive By Compliment –  The other day when I was riding up Mt. Diablo in the middle chain ring feeling pretty fly a most amazing and complimentary thing happened.  A very large SUV with 3 cute guys in their late teens or early 20s started to pass me as they were coming down the mountain.  The kid driving had his window open and he pointed at me and said “YOU!  are beautiful”   So to the adorable kid in the big SUV, “Thank you!  YOU made my day!”

addendum – I think what he meant was “for climbing the mountain at your advanced age” but I dug it, anyhow.

2). Look and Feel –  How do you like my spiffy new template?  Pretty clean and nice, eh?  I owe it all to Runner Susan who is the bestest bloggy friend a girl could ever, ever have.  If you want you blog sexed up and beautiful you really must avail yourself of her services through the Masthead Factory.  You won’t regret it!

3).  Training is solidly under way and my thunder thighs are feeling well used.  I had almost forgotten about that ‘hurts so good’ feeling but I must admit – it is good.  Me gusta, mucho!

4).  Dating and romance make me crazy.  I’ve had 3.2 dates with the man I like and I like him all the more so now I’ve already transcended to the crazy woman who is insecure and sure he is going to dump me any second.  That does not hurt so good – it is absurd and stupid and I need to stop it.

5).  On Feb 7 there is a national ALS fundraising event called The War on ALS put together by the Blazeman Foundation.  ALS is a nasty, nasty disease that takes your life inch by inch; day by day.   I am a participant in this indoor Spin-a-thon and will spin in a trainer or stationary bike for 2 hours or so.   Not that big a deal for me but 16.5 hours seemed a little over the top.    I am raising money. I’m hoping to get people to donate $16.50 which would be 1 dollar for every hour John Blais spent making his life long dream of becoming an IronMan come true.  5 bucks works, too!  So does $1.65.  Anything, really.

Monday Monday – Thunder Thighs

I Have Thunder Thighs

In 2005 Nike launched an ad campaign that was intended to be body positive and pro-running (well duh- it’s Nike!)  One of their posters showed a nice, healthy pair of thighs and declared in large print – I Have Thunder Thighs and in smaller print “And that’s a compliment because they are strong and toned and muscular.  And though they are unwelcome in the petite section they are cheered on in  marathons.”

I thought it was a great campaign and applauded their efforts all the while having to ignore 99.9% of the skinny models in their other ads.

Today I declare myself to have thunder thighs for my own reason.  Reasons having to do with  my bike.

When I first started riding with TGD (the good doctor) last May he could always kick my ass – always.  At first I could keep up with him pretty  well but as the months went by he got stronger and I really didn’t and so keeping up with him became a struggle.  When we climbed Mt. Diablo he would get way ahead of me and, like everyone else, have to wait until I caught up.

Today we rode our bike to the junction on Mt. Diablo which involves about a 2,000 foot climb.  It isn’t super hard but you do have to work to make it up the hill.  TGD was on-call and had to stop to answer the phone repeatedly but I wouldn’t know he had stopped until I looked back and down the hill (it goes switch back) and not see him.   I would stop and wait and then, when he didn’t show up for a while  I would go back DOWN  the mountain to fetch him and then go back up again.  Last year this would have been flat out unthinkable.  No way would I have headed down for fear of never making it back up to where I was.  Every inch of climb was an air robbing, gasp laden struggle.

But wait!  There’s more!  My bike has a triple on it and I generally have to resort to the small chain ring by the time I’ve climbed about 800 – 900feet.  Not today.  Today I made it up to the junction in the middle chain ring – and it wasn’t even that hard.

WINNER!

So today I declare myself to be a woman with Thunder Thighs.  Nice, thunderously strong, thighs – and for probably the first time in my entire life I appreciate them.

Everybody’s Doin’ It – ProWash

Pro Wash

Pro Wash

I was approached by the ProWash people last November and I’ve had the stuff since at least early December so there’s no good excuse for why I’ve had to be goaded into writing this review because Misty and Donald beat me to it.  Or is there?  There sort of is.

I was very excited to be asked to try this stuff because I had a problem in the form of a malorderous sports bra that wafts the stench of a 1,000 Durian fruit when I sweat.  I love that bra, though so I wanted to salvage it.  It was with that in mind that I washed my first load of stinking sports clothes with 1 oz. of ProWash.  When the load was dry I eagerly fetched my bra, held it tight to my nose and was greeted with the smell of the great outdoors on a beautiful sunny day.  But would it stand up to a run?  Oh yes – yes it did!  I no longer envisioned myself running along being chased by a trail of flies like a garbage truck.  Sheer joy.

The sort of reason I took a while to write the review is that the first time I used the product I stupidly added a pair of new, never been washed, BROWN, Injinji socks to the load.  they were not colorfast.  It caused a problem and I thought the Pro Wash was it but no – it was my stupidity.  So remember, kids, don’t put brand new, dark things in with h light things.  If you do just remember that OxyClean and Shout are your friends.  I recovered the messed up clothes.

I tried the Pro Wash twice more – once with 2 measures of  Pro Wash (because that’s what the package says for some types of top loaders) and once with 1 measure of Pro Wash and 1 of regular degergent.  That last combo is my favorite.  The clothes smell really great and are sparkly clean.   It’s very cost effective, too.  You can get 3 24 oz. pouches  (it comes in a soft containter) for $22.46 from Amazon which works out to about 31 cents a load. That’s more than worth it to extend the life of a favorite running shirt or bra.

If you just happen to stink up your exercise clothes and find that over time the stink is there the second you start to sweat you really need to buy some Pro Wash.    If you don’t stink up your clothes would you mind terribly telling me what your secret is?  Sounds very handy!

Hump Day Miscellany – Late Again!

I guess Thursday really is the new Wednesday or is that the other way around?  I don’t know.  I just know that my blogging has gotten pretty sporatic because I’m starting to bore myself but let me just see if I can pull a rabbit out of my hat.

1).  I am 1 1/2 weeks into my training program and I’m feeling pretty good.  This surprises me because what I did was to take last year’s 20 week program and just lop off the first 7 weeks so that I started at what should have been week 8.  It’s already up to 10.5 hours of training a week and I expected that to really hurt but so far it’s okay.  Let’s see how I feel 2 or 3 weeks from now.  Anyone want to lay odds on me starting to whine?

2).  To the guy who started  honking at the runners crossing the road last night – where exactly did you think you could go?  Traffic on your  narrow road was backed up because many runners were crossing the driveway a guy was turning into and he had to wait for them which caused a car behind him to stop which caused you to stop  so some of us went the other way around the second car and crossed in front of you.  And you honked at us!  Why is that?  Were you wanting to rear end the guy stopped in front of you?  I’d say I’m sorry but apparently we saved you from yourself so perhaps you should thank us.

3).  Buh Bye W!  I missed your parting speech but that’s okay.  I’m ready for the changing of the guard.

4).  IF you want a truly delicious snack make some of this Orange Cranberry Chex Mix.  A friend of my sister’s brought it to a party at Christmas and I had to take the bowl and put it on the other side of the room to stop stuffing it in my mouth.  The mix, not the bowl.  This stuff is to die for.

5). Is Facebook killing the blog or is it RSS?  I have no idea but I hear that the RSS feed for this blog is really unreliable.  If you hardly ever see my updates try deleting me from your blog reader and adding again using the subscribe buttons on this page – not the one in the browser.

See what I mean?  Booooorrrriiinnngggg….. I got nothin’.  Sorry!  And no – there is no particular reason for that picture except that it showed up in my Tagaroo plugin and I thought it was funny.

Monday Monday – Another Frabjous Weekend

Picture two women cruising the California coastline in a convertible with the top down on a beautiful sunny day having just had a stunning and exhilarating  trail run followed by an authentic and delicious lunch at a little Tacqueria.  And that was just how my weekend ended.  Everything leading up to that moment was equally as sunshine and contentment infused.  This weekend took the grump out of grumpy leaving only the “y” for YES!  YES! life is good.   YES! life is rich.  Yes I still don’t have a job but YES! my family is all in good health and the weather was glorious and I lived a blessed life this weekend.

Friday night I had date #2 with a man I like very much.  We hung out and drank a glass of wine at my house then we went and saw Frost/Nixon which was very good and then we went out to dinner and then we came back to my house and had a cup of tea.  Lovely.  I really enjoy his company.

Saturday I had a  fantastic bike ride with Forward Motion and in some ways I killed it.  I was still slower than most of the people (but not all) but I was faster than usual and it was one of those rides that left me feeling stronger and improved as a cyclist and that put a huge grin on my face.

Sunday I went on the most amazing, beautiful run on Angel Island with a friend.  The air was clear and crisp and cool but it was sunny and bright.  The trails there are mostly single track and there was a race but I was not a participant (since it got sold out).  We ended up inadvertently playing salmon and going against the crowd which mostly meant getting out of the way but that was okay because that was the uphill part.  Who doesn’t like to step off the trail and stand still frequently on the uphill climbs?  I was good with that.  Some other people from Forward Motion were running the race so we got to see them and hang out for a while.  Good times.

When we got to the top of Angel Island  we were greeted with a panoramic, 3 bridge view of the entire Bay Area.  With no no bib and no concern at all about our  time we were free to just hang out there enjoying  the view for quite some time .View From Angel Island

After the run my friend and I went to visit the new might-become-my-beau for a moment (does that count as a 3rd date?) and then we went out for a delicious  buritto followed by a drive back home with the top down on her convertible Mercedes.   The whole weekend was positively frabjous.

not her car but it might as well be

not her car but it might as well be

How  much can I complain when I have days like that?  Not too much.  Being unemployed is not a happy thing and the economy really and truly is in the toilet and will take quite some time to recover and that’s not a good thing but right about now I’m feeling like that’s the only not good thing in my life.  I have plenty enough resources to keep on keepin’ on for quite a while so color me  happy.

Hump Day Miscellany – My Best Diet Tips

I’ve been thinking about food a lot lately.  First I was thinking about how to get rid of the Christmas weight (which was only about 2.5 pounds – yay!) and then I was thinking about how food will soon become the thing I can’t get enough of as my training ramps up. And I was thinking about how I really hope that this year’s training lets me lose another 5 pounds over where I was at Vineman because that would be bliss.  So here’s what I know about food and eating

1). We eat to live, we do not live to eat – except during the holidays and at really great BBQs and parties and expensive restaurants when all bets are off.

2).  Twice as much food does not taste twice as good.  It’s better to get a small first helping and then another small second helping to get that “oooo… I loved this stuff and could eat it all night” feeling.  Two giant helpings just makes your tummy hurt.

3). Everyone has a food group that is poison for them.  For me it is what used to be known as carbs (rice, pasta, bread, potatoes).  I say used to because now certain fruits are considered carbs by some as is sugar.  Sugar is  another group as far as I’m concerned and not a group I have problems with. I also think all fruit is good fruit.  But getting back to the point – I LOVE carbs as I define them and they stick to me so if I cut way back on them I lose weight.  Other people just need to stop drinking soda or give up ice cream and cream cheese.  Identify your poison and cut back but don’t give it up.  That alone will help you drop a few pounds.

4).  Diets with names have interesting information but they also contain a lot of bad information so you have to be careful.

5).  Your body does not harbor toxins.  Your liver and kidneys do a nice job of eliminating bad things and if you are exposed to or consume fat soluable toxins, starving yourself, using enemas and drinking hot lemon water laced with cayenne will not make the stuff leech out.  Turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to any eating plan that claims to cleanse your body of toxins – it is bunk.

6).  Rapid weight loss due to extreme deprivation  is well known to result in the weight finding its way home and bringing some friends. It isn’t a horrible idea to jump start weight loss but  the only known long term solution to excess weight is to figure out an eating plan that works for you day after day, week after week, month after month.  The notion that  you can cut out all of this and that and slowly add it back until you get to maintenance is kind of daft.  You are far more likely to add it back until you have regained all your weight and, as I said, some fat cell friends have joined the party.

7).  Exercise makes a huge difference but you can’t just declare “I went to the gym so I deserve this bowl of ice cream!”  That way lies madness  – but you knew that already.  You actually have to run an over all caloric deficit to lose weight.  I don’t believe that it is a simple formula (3500 cal/pound) and it depends on a lot of subtle realities about your particular chemistry (see point 3) but you do need to run a deficit.  That part is for sure.

Disclaimer – I’m not a nutritionist nor do I play one on TV but I have been dealing with weight loss and body image issues for  over 40 years and these tips are what now guide me.  Your milage may vary and you may have some good ideas of your own.  If so please feel free to share.

Monday Monday – The Circle of Life

Happy New Year!  I’m still here and you’re still there and life goes on, changed very little by the actual date and yet – we all wake up January 1 filled to the brim with determination to make THIS year the BEST year ever.  And there’s certainly nothing wrong with that.  I’m a little late to the New Year’s Party and I never did close out the old year so here we go.

The Holidays –This year the plan was to go to the East Coast and visit my sister and her family – a plan I liked very much.    However, because I was leaving town I felt no compulsion whatsoever to decorate my house.  Further complicating and alleviating my holiday season at the same time was our collective choice to exchange only handmade gifts.  This meant no Christmas shopping.  Don’t get me wrong – NOT having to scour a thousand stores in search of the perfect something to get someone even though I had no idea what that person needed or wanted was sheer bliss.  Not spending hundreds of dollars on tchotchkes to fill stockings with was equally exhilarating.  It did, however leave me feeling a little empty and not quite filled with the spirit of the holiday which I found quite surprising.

I did what I could to fix that by making gifts (wine charms) and making candied walnuts (to die for!) and eating the chocolate covered cookies the Good Doctor brought home from the office but still – something was missing.  And then it wasn’t.

Our travels to the East Coast went relatively well. I was excited to be flying from Oakland to Baltimore a then Providence because that’s practically direct!  Only the airplane in Oakland had to make a little stop in San Diego first.  Not so direct.  Oh well.   My son missed a connection and I was delayed 90 minutes but there quite a few people in Baltimore being told that the Southwest might be able to get them on a flight Christmas day.  This was on the 23rd.  I had no basis for complaint and my heart broke for these poor people.

We finally arrived at my sisters at about 2 AM EST and the next day my Humbly Ann and her husband and their puppy arrived and Christmas was ON!  We spent 4 fabulous days eating, drinking, playing games, watching movies, cooking, baking, eating, hanging out and loving each other.  The holidays just don’t get any better than than.

Getting home seemed to take just about forever (Providence to Midway to ABQ to Oakland) but get there we did and the house was intact and I had Pookie with me so again – no complaints.

My Birthday– We left my sister’s on the 28th and the 29th was my 54th birthday.  I waited until just after midnight on Sunday to rifle my bag for the package my sister had put in there. It was a really beautiful beaded necklace from Roatan.  In the morning I celebrated  by going for a bike ride and climbing Mt. Diablo to the junction.  Because I had been off my bike for a couple of weeks and had only run 1 time in CT. my legs were fresh and not even a teeny bit sore.  I’m pretty sure that is the only time I’ve ever climbed that hill on fresh legs and I really enjoyed it.  The air was crystal clear and the view was spectacular.  You could see all the way to the Sierra.  I ended up spending the evening alone but then went to a birthday sister’s (we share the same birthday)  house for cake and she let me share blowing out the candles.

New Year’s Eve – I ended up going to a friend’s house for pecan pie, champagne and we watched Pride and Prejudice.  Low key but perfect.

Year End Wrap Up– 2008 was not a great year in many ways.  I only worked for 4 months and the economy just got worse and worse.  My family and I all enjoyed strong, good health, though and I’ve come to think of that as the thing against which I measure good or bad.  In that respect life was very, very good.  Also,  I had a great racing year, moving from a back of the pack athlete to a solidly middle of the pack athlete and I liked that.  I liked it a lot.  I failed to note my year end totals for mileage but I think it was about 2200 miles on the bike, 550  miles of running and 105 or so miles swimming.  Not too shabby.

The New Year– As I was swimming and riding and running over the last couple of days it occurred to me that tons of the people I saw had just dusted off their lazy asses to execute on yet another New Year’s promise of getting in shape whereas I was just continuing to do what I do.  And yes – I did revel in an overblown sense of superiority.  I don’t do that often so please – don’t harsh my holier-than-thou.  It was fun for a minute or 2.

I’ve made 2 resolutions for this year:

1).  Get a job.  This make take a few more months but it WILL happen

2).  Get a boyfriend.   I’ve had 3 dates and have another one tomorrow night and a 2nd date on Friday with a man I rather like.  I guess I’ll have to do a seperate post about the dates if you are interested.
