Exactly!

In response to the stupid ad regarding the Obama/Ayres “connection” Obama said

“It’s easy to rile up a crowd by stoking anger and division,” Obama said. “But that’s not what we need right now in the United States. The times are too serious. The challenges are too great. The American people aren’t looking for someone who can divide this country — they’re looking for someone who will lead it.”

Amen to that!

Watching the nightly news and seeing a bunch of ya-hoos yelling “Drill, Baby Drill” and “NoBama” and grousing about Nancy Pelosi (and by the way – what the heck did she do to rile up the conservatives?) makes me want to cry.

FOCUS, PEOPLE!! FOCUS!  You might not think Obama can lead the way out of this mess but please know why you think McCain is more capable than Obama at FIXING THE ECONOMIC CRISES and HEALTH CARE REFORM!  The rest of the stuff is all just ugly window dressing.  And ps to people who got angry at a campaign riddled with cheap accusations and name calling.  Who are you mad at now?

Get over this terrorist crap and finding ‘the truth’.   The truth is well published.  Bill Ayers did bad things 40 years ago and he lives in Obama’s neighborhood and he threw a coffee klatch for Obama 13 years ago and they both served on the board of the same non-profit.  That’s the story. Now FOCUS!  Please.  Please wear  your thinking hats and not your “That One” hats. This is the most important election of your life.  Be considerate.

And that’s the end of my political rantings – I promise.  My next post will be related to how running literally gave me a pain in the a$$.

Hump Day Miscellany – Fear and Loathing

I’m sorry but I have a few things to say about… the campaign.  I’M SORRY!

1).  As someone who is paying for her own health care coverage I’m am stunned and frightened by McCain’s “solution”.

I live for the day when I am employed and have decent health care coverage, subsidized by my employer. And I don’t want to pay taxes on that benefit, thank you very much.

So McCain would give me a $5K tax credit to shop around for my own coverage.  Great.  Does he have any idea how much good medical insurance costs?      I don’t think he does because if he did he would know that $5K/yr isn’t much help to a family.  And how are we  supposed to get through that first year – the one before we qualify for the tax credit?  Are we supposed to spend a year having our income effectively lowered by INCREASED taxes (and this would increase your taxes) before we qualify for the (inadequate) tax credit?  I’m not seeing how this will work.

McCain should  understand that letting the insurance companies play the free market game by allowing people to get insurance out of state is an endless nightmare.  He clearly knows nothing about health care administration, managing medical records, about what people have to do when they are denied coverage or about the greed of insurance companies.   Who will people go to when they are denied coverage – the federal government?  That would require a whole new agency and we really don’t need any more agencies – we really don’t.  They cost money and invite new and inventive ways to create government inefficiency.  No – his plan is outlandish, outrageous and totally unworkable.  If you were sitting on the fence before think good and hard about the McCain health care plan.  It stinks.

2).  Who the hell does Sarah Palin think she is saying that Obama isn’t willing to drill for oil but he’s willng to drill for votes?  What the heck else is a political campaign about – DUH!  That is right down there with her claiming she’s going to put the federal government’s checkbook on the internet – when Obama  (with support from  McCain) already did that 2 years ago.  Way to go, lady!  She now claims she just meant that “in general”  Nice save – NOT!

3).   Why does McCain insist on saying glowing things about the strength of the American worker as though that has anything to do with anything?  It doesn’t matter how hard you are willing to work if there are no jobs.  Maybe he needs a personal economic bail out package so he can buy a clue.

4).  Regardless of what I think about Sarah Palin as a person or a politician I know this much is true – she can’t think on her feet.  My evidence for that is that she couldn’t name a newspaper she reads (and I’m quite sure she does read them) and she couldn’t remember a Supreme Court case she disagreed with even though she recently had big issues with the reduction in the  judgement against the Exxon Valdez and was very vocal about it.  She just isn’t very quick and I think that’s a problem – a huge problem.

5).  The McCain people need to drop the ‘Obama will raise taxes’ and the misplaced indignation that Ahmadinijad called Isreal a ‘Stinking Corpse’ and yet Obama wants to open diplomatic talks with him.  We need to deal with Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, Darfur and probably some others.  If we can’t find diplomatic solutions to any of these issues we are doomed – we can’t keep tossing bodies at the problem and we’re out of money.  McCain is too bellicose.  He scares me.

Monday Monday – Running CAN Be Fun

I’ve been running more lately in preparation for the Nike Half Marathon.  If you know me then you know that training for a half marathon is not something I normally do.  Generally speaking I make sure I’ve got a couple of 6 and 8 mile runs under my belt before the big event (or maybe 1) and then I show up and see what happens.   This time – I’m actually running more!

I had my longest week last week – 28 miles.  whoa!  That’s huge for me.  To what do I attribute my willingness to step it up?  Running with friends!  That’s right – my friends Dana and  Maggs have  invited me to join them and it’s like a whole new world opening up for me.

First of all, I was always convinced I couldn’t talk and run at the same time.  I was also convinced that 10 minute miles would kill me.  Wrong, wrong, wrong… I can run 10 minute miles and chat JUST LIKE A NORMAL PERSON!  Color me stunned. I ran with DPR and Jenny and Carrie in Coeur d’Alene but I think I was so worried about being the slowpoke I just didn’t get the fun out of it.   In the last 2 weeks the whole fun factor has revealed itself and I think I might actually have a decent race on the 19th.

So – if you are like me and you  see running as something you have to do to get from T2 to the finish line try running with friends.  12 miles goes by like nothing and it’s fun!

Weekend Update

I just got back from spending the weekend at Stinson Beach with 6 women from my book group.  We walked on the beach, sat in the hot tub, watched funny things on TV, ate great food and maybe drank a little wine.

Today’s Ride

Up the North side of Mt. Diablo (cilck to see details)

I rode up the north side of Mt. Diablo to the Juniper overlook.  It was a first for me as I have always gone up the south side.   I let myself go just over 32 mph on the way down – whee!

I feel human again.  In fact, I feel great!

Hump Day Miscellany – What is Happening to Me?

I’m just going to get right to it here

1).  Not having a triathlon to train for and not having an early morning riding partner and thinking I should be doing ‘stuff’ during the day is killing me.  I have not been on my bike since I raced on the 21st.  Shameful.  I could have gone on a nice ride today and I decided I had too much to do. What sort of ‘too much?’  Apparently playing Scrabble on Facebook = too much to do.

2).  I did spend several hours getting a newsletter out to my race club. I need to quit working so hard at this.  It’s keeping me off my bike.

3).  I’d like to publicly apologize to Katie Couric for all the negative thoughts I had when she got her current job.  I thought it should go to Diane Sawyer or someone with more experience and who had paid more dues.  Well first of all, I have no idea if Diane Sawyer was even interested.  Second of all Katie Couric is doing a fine job of asking straight questions (and I beg you to tell me how asking a direct question about a documented encounter constitutes “gotcha journalism”) and she seems very well suited for her job.  And no – that was not a pun.

4).  I need to get my a$$ in gear in so many ways.  So many that I find it overwhelming.  Time to make a list and get stuff done bird by bird.

Tri, Tri and Tri again

Forward – I have written about this before (twice) but I just got the pics from this year’s race and it brought it all up for me again so this is what we call a three-peat. Apologies if you are bored with this story.

The Tri for Real in Pleasanton, Ca is my “A” race because this is where it all started for me. I don’t have pictures of me doing it in 2000 on a Schwinn Varsity 10 speed but I do have the official results and my time was 2:31.05 and I placed 254 out of 260 women. 3 “men” came in behind me. One was 11 years old, 1 was limping pretty badly and the other one was grossly overweight. I hated that race and swore that I’d rather run a marathon every day of my life rather than ever do another triathlon.

In 2005 I started blogging and I bumped into Jeanne’s blog and that lead me to Bold’s blog (he retired so no link) and consequently a whole host of triathlon blogs and that opened up the world of triathlon to me again and so in 2006 I decided to give this race another try. I was cool – I had a hybrid bike, spd pedals and I owned a cycling jersey. I finished in what I was sure was 2:11 but there was no entry for me on the results sheets. I spoke with the RD and ultimately they decided I finished in 2:08. Whatever.

The other thing that happened at that race was that the volunteers were from Forward Motion Race Club and they seemed like such nice people and it seemed like it would be really fun to race and train with locals so I joined. That was a good move because in 2007 I did 6 triathlons (Wildflower, Tri for Fun, Folsom International, Tri for Real, Bethel Island and SOMA quarterman). I was hooked. In early 2007 I bought a fancy carbon bike, I bought team kit, I bought a wetsuit and so it goes.

This year I raced less but I raced better finishing my first 70.3 (Vineman) in 6:55 with a little help from my friend Jenny Moore who watched the time and made sure we came in under 7 hours. I had way too much fun at that race (see last set of pics). I also did Tri for Real again with the goal of coming in under 2 hours. Mission accomplished – with a smile on my face.

I’m already signed up for Oceanside 70.3 for April 4, 2009 and there’s really no telling what next year may bring.

Monday Monday – Being Cheerful!

My goodness but the news is gloomy.  Aren’t you glad you have running and cycling and swimming to keep your mood in check?  I am.

This weekend I needed to run 12 miles in preparation for the Nike Half Marathon on Oct 18 – the one I have not trained for 1 bit.  As you may recall I ran almost 9 miles last Wednesday and could barely walk on Thursday.  I was doubtful about being able to force myself to run 12 solo so I went to the Nike group run and lined up with the 10:30 pace group.

I had my earbuds for my iPod in my ears but didn’t even turn it on for 6 or 7 miles.  That’s what running in large group does.  It makes the miles tick by and the experience remarkably pleasurable.  The only reason I turned it on for the last part is because by then our tight knit group had sort of spread out and it was sort of a loose collection of people all running on the same path in the same direction and my legs were getting tired.  The last 3 miles were a bit of a challenge but in an effort to bring it to an end I picked up the pace and brought it home.

Perhaps one of the best parts of running with the Nike group is that the Jamba Juice people were there at the finish, doling out cups of Jamba Juice. And there was Bare Naked granola and some baked potato chips and other tired, sweaty runners, all of us happy for having gone the distance.

I feel okay today – not bad at all.  Tomorrow I swim with masters and then run about 9 with some friends.  If you don’t hear from me for a while after that you’ll know its because ramping up my running volume so fast has made my legs fall off.

Another Alaskan Woman Speaks Her Mind About Palin

I got this in email from 21st Century Sister and immediately set out to find a link so I could share it. I found the link.  I don’t really care if this was written by the woman it is attributed to. I don’t care who wrote it because it mirrors my own thoughts and I like it.  Assuming it really was written by Mairiis Kilcher of  Homer, Alaska, it’s just that much sweeter.

Excerpts:  (click on the exceprt to get the full text but turn the sound OFF on  your computer first.  This site plays music)

I am a 66 year old , Alaska born ,pioneer woman. Sarah Palin does not represent my values and my beliefs, nor those of countless Alaska women, who have also hunted, fished, raised families , and cared for a disabled family member while earning a living . I come from a large homesteading family and grew up in a one room log cabin with 7 brothers and sisters. We hunted and fished, out of necessity, not for recreation.

….

We abhor her stance against protecting Alaska from Global Warming, she shows no concern for the threat it poses to Polar Bears and countless first Alaskans who depend on the sea mammals for their very lives.
….

We ask: Why is no one making a big deal about the fact that Palin opposed the ALaska Clean Water Initiative (proposition 4)–which would have imposed tighter restrictions on large scale mining operations?

We ask: what has she done for women in our state? What has she done for health care in our state.? Nothing . I am at this moment too broke to afford even a pair of drugstore reading glasses, let alone expensive designer Sarah Palin glasses!

Who can we contact to bring our concerns to the attention of the American public before it is too late? Will the Obama campaign contact us and invite us to speak out around the Nation, so we can tell the world we are insulted and ashamed to be associated with Sarah Palin? Call me, I am ready and willing to go..
SIncerely,

Mairiis Kilcher , Homer, Alaska”

There is lots more text in between the dots and I encourage you to read the whole thing.

Have a great weekend!

Look At My Shiney New Blog!

Is this not fabulous?  It IS fabulous and it is brought to you by the Fabulous Team Sumy Designs!  That’s right – if you want to be fabulous you MUST visit them and get them to sex up your blog.  Nobody does it better.

They are hosting my blog, too.  It’s very cost effective because I can deal with the technology and not be made crazy by the platform. My former host, the incomparable Amazing Hip runs a different platform and it out nerded me with the latest upgrade.  Jane left the building and I could not figure out how to get her back in so I fled.

The very lovely  Sisters Runner Susan and Runner Amy set up the blog and designed my masthead.  Fabulos-o, non?  OUI!  I hope you enjoy it as much as me – and yes I do mean I hope you enjoy the design as much as you enjoy reading my blog, if not more so.
