And if you can’t find those, try these

We’ll be cheering for you! And that goes for anyone who is running but who is not on the list. Drop me a line and I will add you.

If you’re not on the list please drop by the blogs of those who are and leave them some words of encouragment if you haven’t already done so.

Tales of Peru, Part I

Going to a 3rd World country is an enlightening experience. It serves to remind us that the wealth and freedom we enjoy in North America and Europe and other major economic powers is not universal. It reminds us that there are cities where 1 percent of the population controls over 90 percent of the wealth and the rest of the people just do their best to eek out a reasonable living. It catapults us in to the past because countries that have not grown economically tend to have backwater areas where people live the same today as they lived a hundred years or so ago and that’s where the real beauty and wonder comes in.

I had my first experience grappling with the language barrier immediately on boarding the plane in San Francisco. I got to my seat and a woman was sitting in it. I looked at her and said, “excuse me but I think that is my seat”. I was in “C” which is on the aisle and she was on “A” which is the window.
She looked at me and said “A”.
I said, “Yes – A. That’s by the window. I’m in “C” and I pointed.
Her response was “C”.
“Yes – “C”. “A” is over there” still pointing.
“C”

And then I got it. She wasn’t saying “C”, she was saying “Si”.

As I took the window seat I looked at the people in the row behind us and remarked, “At least we know “B” will get it right”.

Our first stop was Lima which is a modern city full of high rise buildings and cars. So many cars. Many of those cars have stickers on them proclaiming they are a Taxi cab. For many of them the bumpers are falling off, the windshields are cracked and at least one door is held shut with duct tape. I wish I had taken pictures of these things but alas, I didn’t. The other interesting thing about these cabs is that the drivers would pull into a gas station and get just enough gas to keep going. Gas was quite expensive there and these guys would ask for 8 Soles of gas. That’s about $2.50. The cabs were mostly these tiny Daewoo cars so I suppose less than a gallon of gas would last for a fare or two.

The drivers in Peru make drivers anywhere else look like little old ladies. Lane lines? Mere hints. Stop signs – nice idea if it works out for you but honking the horn as you barrel through the intersection is usually okay. Honk the horn when someone is going too slow. Honk the horn when you think a person might need a cab. Honk the horn if you think someone might cross the street. Honk the horn because you are bored. Drivers in Lima honk their horns about 40 times an hour. It’s a very noisy city but the cabs are so cheap! You can get across the city for about 3 bucks. You just tell the cab driver what you are willing to pay and they either take your business or they don’t.

We stayed in the Miraflores district of Lima which is one of the most upscale places. Our hotel, the El Condado had huge rooms – they were pretty much suites. We got there after midnight but before we could go to sleep we needed to get some bottled water and some money. As luck would have it we were right across the street from the 24 hour grocery store. I paid for our water in dollars and got change in Soles. When I got back to the room I discovered that I had been shortchanged 10 Soles. Welcome to Peru. Fortunately 10 Soles is about $3.20 so no big deal but lesson learned – count your change. At that point we were exhausted and very happy to hit the pillows. And then the car alarm across the street went off. It was one of those that has 5 different sounds – Bwee Oooo, Bwee Oooo, Bwe Oooo, Waaaaah, Waaaah, Waaaaah, Hoooonk, Hoooonk, Hooonk.., you know the kind. It went off about every 10 minutes so we did not get a good night’s sleep.

No matter. We woke up the next morning excited to check out the city. At first we just walked around and then headed into Central Lima to see the Place de Mayor (the Main Plaza)

We were hoping to see the changing of the guard but due to some politico being on the scene all we got was this:

It failed to satisfy but what can you do?

Our next stop was the Cathedral de San Francisco where they have creepy catacombs. I’d never been in creepy catacombs before so I just had to go see. The English speaking tour wasn’t happening until 3:00 so we just tagged along on the Spanish speaking tour. It did little for our understanding of the history of this place but we still got to see it.

On closer inspection you see this:

The place is a pigeon condo!

What I really wanted to see, though was this (note – this photo was taken on the QT because you are not allowed to photograph inside the cathedral:

You can read more about the cathedral here if you like.

After visiting the Cathedral we walked quite a distance and into a sort of sketchy part of town to visit the Museo de Arte which was a small museum with some really beautiful pieces in it. One of our favorites was a diorama of the Last Supper with a little twist

Unfortunately I’ve cut off Jesus’ head but hopefully you can see that he is holding a hot dog as are some of the disciples. On the plates on the table are fillet of cuy, known in the states as guinea pig. In Peru guinea pig is an important ceremonial food. Hot dogs are not. One can only assume that the artist had a little ax to grind with the church.

There is a bit more to our first day in Lima but I still don’t feel that great and I need to get to bed so this first installment is a bit short. I’ll try to be more concise in future installments but hopefully I’ve given you a little flavor of the impact Lima had on me.

Nike Bling

It’s really hard to photograph silver jewelry if you don’t have the right set up so these photos don’t really do it justice but here you go.

Front on the left, back on the right.

I wish I had a picture of the pretty firemen who handed them out but I don’t.

Shout outs to Juls who managed to get her bling, too. I had a VM from her that I discovered when I was in my car on the way the home. So yes Juls – I did get something pretty and silver to hang around my neck because I Ran Like A Girl and I earned it! I hope your foot heals soon.

What a Beautiful Day for a Run

Sometimes you just have to get up and show up to make things work out. Today was one of those days. I woke up at 4:00 AM which was good because I had set the alarm to 4:30 and that would have put me in an (unnecessary) panic. As it was I woke up, decided I felt pretty lousy but that I would just walk it through, one step at a time and see how I felt at the start line.

I did the usual stuff – used the bathroom, had some coffee and whole wheat toast (oops! Forgot the banana), brushed my teeth, put on the running clothes, pinned on my bib, got my chip attached to my shoes, grabbed my sweats bag and headed for the door.

The drive in was uneventful except I missed a turn to park at the ball park and catch the shuttle but I found a garage near the start and parked there. On the way to the start I noticed a long bank of port-a-potties and no lines – woo hoo! I thought the event was just not that crowded but I was wrong. I was just really early.

Then I remembered that I got to use the VIP tent due to the way I registered so I went there and they had more coffee and Luna bars and it was oh so nice. I skipped the coffee but grabbed a water and some Luna Bars then headed for the start.

Oh – now there were thousands of people. It was really crowded. Long story short, after about 30 minutes we finally got to head to the start. I walked until the pads were in view and then started running. It was a beautiful, clear morning. We ran through the downtown and on to Fisherman’s Wharf.

I love running along the water in San Francisco – it is so beautiful. We headed up the hill into the park. This is the hill that I managed so effortlessly in July only this time I walked it. No sense burning out early. Through the park and down by the water again, up another hill and BAM – the most gorgeous view of the Golden Gate Bridge shrouded in flocculent, blue grey fog. Just beautiful.

Along the waterfront and past the adult cheerleaders (mostly male), around the bend and then… OMG – a hill. A hill that went on for ever and ever and ever. I had thought that this was an easier course than the SF Marathon but no such luck. We went a different way and the different way involved a steep hill that lasted for at least a mile. Then down hill and then back up – forever. I walked the hills unapologetically.

Finally we got to the park and I knew I was almost done. I tried to curtail the walking in favor of running and getting it over with. At some point I decided that a 2:45 would be okay. I finished in 2:41 something. Not bad considering my training for this event and my cold.

Let’s review the training:
Week of 7/31 – 26.2 miles (SF Marathon)
Week of 8/6 – 3
Week of 8/13 – 2.62
Week of 8/20 – 2.87
Week of 8/27 – 8.07
Week of 9/3 – 12.57 (woo hoo!)
Week of 9/10 – 3.13
Week of 9/17 – 9.23 (another big one!)
Week of 9/24 – 4.41
Week of 10/1 – 5
Week of 10/8 – 0
Week of 10/15 – 3

So that 13.1 miles represents more running than I’ve done in the last month which makes me very proud I was able to do it at all.

Fun Things about this event:
1). Thank you Humbly Anne for straightening me out about the marketing message. It makes sense
2). Great crowd support on the course thanks in large part to TNT but the cheerleaders were awesome
3). Special thanks to the 2 ladies who held up the “X miles to beer” and the inflatable beer bottle and managed to show up in several spots. I’m sure the marathon runners really appreciated that.
4). The guy who stood just ahead of the finish line with a sign that said “Amy Will You Marry Me”. And thanks to Amy for coming in when I did. It was a very cute thing to see
5). Good looking SF Firemen in tuxes holding the Tiffany boxes on silver trays. You guys were a sight for sore eyes.
6). Tiffany for cosponsorship and giving up pretty necklaces. So much nicer than big honkin’ medals.
7). Lots of great food at the end (yeah for Jamba Juice even though I couldn’t find it)
8). Free massage. Ahhhhhhh…….

And thanks to me for showing up and going the distance. I actually feel better and I also feel like I’m back from vacation and ready to rumble (loosely translated that means train).

Snorfeling in to Nike

I went to the Nike Expotique (gag) today and picked up my packet and then had the pleasure of meeting Juls from Keeping Pace.

Juls and I are quite the pair for this race. She has a damaged tendon and I am sick with a cold. We’re both going to do what we can, though.

I have lots to say about the Nike messaging
Shop Like a Girl?? They had another one that said ‘Feel Like A Girl’. Say what? Am I supposed to feel like a boy because I’m about to race? I didn’t really get it except you could get a manicure in that tent. To their credit they had a great postcard that said something about loving your thunder thighs because they are strong. It was a weird mix.

There was almost no swag. No other vendors got to be there. It’s definitely all about Nike, Nike, And Team in Training and that’s a good thing but still – I wanted more free stuff! As it was I got a teeny Luna Bar and a packet of Cliff Bloks (orange – yum!) and a free Jamba Juice and a wrist band to hold my pace calculator. Not too bad not the load I’m accustomed to.

Time for bed – I hope I have good news for you tomorrow.

Hump Day Miscellany – 2 Days Late

What can say – I’ve been out of the country on vacation and I’ve lost track of the days of the week. And I’ve been busy. You know how it is – you come back from vacation and WHAM – you are up to your ears in “it”. All kinds of “it”.

There are big doings in the 21stCentury Household – big doings! Very exciting stuff but I am awaiting some photos before I reveal what they are – stay tuned.

I know you are waiting for more news of my trip to Peru. The most news I have right now is that after traveling for 26 hours to get home I got sick. I hab a code in mah het. I feel like crap. I ran the 3 worst miles of my life last night. Here I hoped that trekking up the stairs of Inca ruins

and
climbing mountains at altitude

would be sufficient training for my 1/2 marathon on Sunday. HA! I can hardly breath.

that sign says Waynapicchu 2634 m (8642 ft)

I will probably walk this thing with a little jogging in between unless my lungs miraculously clear up. To be honest, I’m in it for the bling so I don’t really care. Sort of. If I were feeling well and were trained I’d like to do it in 2:15 but as it is I don’t think so. Oh well. That’s not as bad as my friend Juls from Keeping Pace who was hoping to smoke this thin in preparation for the CIM where she is attempting a BQ, or was attempting a BQ – until she tore a tendon or something. Bummer Juls. We’ll just have to keep each other company.

In other news – Peruvian misquito bites itch just as much as Norte Americano bites. Bottled water in Peru is not clear, crips spring water – it is distilled, purified bad water with some salts tossed in and it tastes tedious and flat, altitude sickness is awful. More later.

She’s baaaaack…

Today I arrived home (after almost 26 hours of travel) from a most wondrous and fantastic trip to Peru. I am far too tired to produce words that even begin to do it justice but for starters I’ll give you this – a picture of me, high above Machu Picchu (visible in the upper part of the photo) on its sister peak, Huanya Picchu

I did no running on this trip in preparation for the Nike Women’s 1/2 this Sunday. The climb up to this classic photo op involved ascending from 8,000 feet to 9,100 feet and I’m pretty sure that helped my aerobic conditioning a bit.

I will get in a 7 or 8 mile run this week and then just go for it. I will also continue to write about the trip and share more photos with you. I’ve got plenty. Right now I am pooped and after 10 nights in hotels and 1 night sleeping on a plane I can hardly wait to crawl into my own, comfortable, familiar bed.

Stay tuned.

Hump Day Miscellany – Ta Ta!

I’m going to Peru in just about 24 hours! Too bad I have 30 hours of preparation to do! Just kidding. I only have to add some clothes to my bag, clean the house, get some sleep and go.

In my haste to get ready I forgot to empty the pockets of my jeans before I washed them and I just annihilated an expense check for $78. There was enough left to photograph and send to accounting so they can cut me a new one. Oh how I love digital technology!

I’m really glad I called Cingular to ask about International rates on my phone because the guy said if I turn my phone on in Peru and someone calls me and leaves voice mail it will cost $3.49/min. That’s right – $3.49/min if you so much as pick up a signal from a tower. If you actually use the phone they continue to bill you at that rate. I’m sure the unwary generate bills that exceed the GNP of Peru every day. I’ll leave it turned off.

I’d like to leave you with these very important thoughts from the Beach Boys who wrote a song called Mama Sez:

Eat a lot
Sleep a lot
Brush ’em like crazy.
Run a lot
Do a lot
Never be lazy.

Happy training and racing to all and of course I will post pictures when I get back. Ta ta, peeps!!
