Groovin’ while we cruise

I used to think that the only sounds a runner should listen to were the sounds of life – the air whooshing past her ears, the cars and bikes on the road, the bam-bam-bam of construction work, the sounds of the surf and the fog horns and the laughter of little children playing in the park (unless you run a 0 dark-thirty in which case you listen to the sounds of your head trying to organize your day, non?)

That was then, though and now is now. Jeanne recently posted about the addition of an iPod shuffle to her running gear. I also run with a Shuffle (double entendre alert!). I listen to books when I run but occasionally I shuffle over to some tunes just to pick things up and that brings me to a question.

How many of you listen to music while you run? Do you have a favorite mix? Is it available as a podcast? What other podcasts do you know of that are good to listen to (either while running or about running or just about anything)? In other words – what is on your iPod?

(I found the comment button. Ignore e-mail.) Love the new look! It’s crazy baby! And thanks for the shout out. Yeah, I USED to think it was sissy to run with a Shuffle (same entendre, sorry). Or headphones of any kind. Now? Who cares. It makes running fun-ner.Great redecoration, Mrs. Jetson!

I do a mix of inspirational stuff (“How bad do you want it,” “Eye of the Tiger”), R&B (Usher, Ludacris), and showtunes (Hairspray and Wicked). The latest playlist I made also had a few songs off the Walk the Line soundtrack. Those genres work the best for me. It is probably best to try a bunch of different kinds of music and see what best accompanies your running.

Hey! Your template is crazy, I can’t believe you did all that with blogger!I’ve got all kinds of everything on my nano. Really, you just need to find what motivates YOU! I like Metallica, Alient Ant Farm, Nickelback, Default, Kelli Clarkson, Madonna, Linkin Park, Cake. Anything with a fast beat that motivates me! Actually, I need to put up a screen print of my running mixes!

Ok, first: What’s a playlist? This is how clever I am with the shuffle. This morning I ran to the last few chapters of another Elizabeth George novel. Then my shuffle shuffled into Indigo Girls, Midnight Oil, Guster, and I believe, 50cent (who I am trying to like for my daughter’s sake. It’s a struggle. But it did get me shaking my ass.) Oh, and of course Richard Thompson, “Vincent Black Lightning.”I know. I’m weird.
