Hump Day Miscellany – Take the Poll!

Let’s talk about lubrication, shall we? No no – THAT kind. I mean the kind you use in a race. I have been riding my bike almost exclusively in my tri shorts which I much prefer to biking shorts but I have not been using any sort of anything in them. I’m thinking that 56 miles of racing that way is not going to feel good so I’m wondering what is YOUR preferred product:

Please feel free to fill up the comments with anything you have to say about lubing up for the ride.

In other news – we had an evening with Michellie Jones the other night. Here’s proof:

I know – I’m short.

1). She passed around her Silver Medal from the 2000 Olympics and I rubbed it on my cheek hoping for some race magic. We’ll see if it worked on Sunday

2). She fuels up on a cheeseburger and fries the night before a race. It’s her favorite meal

3). She could barely walk after her first HIM or after Florida.

4). She won her first ever IM (Florida) even though she was over 30.

5). She’s sponsored for another 2 years which means she will be a sponsored athlete in her early 40s

6). Let’s hear it for the ‘old’ broads who are out there still dominating the field!

Go Old Broads! Don’t forget the 40 year old swimmer (of course I don’t know her name off the top of my head-but she is my girl!)

and take lube on the road with you- you will want it if you make any pit stops on the way.

Have a wonderful race, can’t wait to hear the details!

  2. Molly says:

So I’ve been using Chamois Butter for long rides all the way up to my century in April. BUT it doesn’t last through a swim leg so I’ve been experimenting with other things for this race.

I didn’t use anything at Wildflower (only 25 mi). I’ve heard A&D is good and survives the swim but haven’t tried it. I also heard Bag Balm works well, so I’ve been trying that on my shorter rides and it seems…OK, nothing special. Barring sudden entry of a late contender, that’s probably what I will use on Sunday.

i don’t know about cyclists, but i do know of some runners who prefer THAT kind of lube for anti-chafing. i’ve even thought about trying it. i figure if it’s been made to be nice to my little pink smiley, then i won’t have an allergic reaction.

i can’t remember what else i was going to say. my dog farted. i have to leave town.

  4. momo says:

AQUAPHOR. see that? caps. that means it works. lather yourself all up with it and you’ll be fine in your trishorts.

and look how cute michellie jones is with that PINK on her shirt. pink rocks!

  5. Donald says:

Did you guys remind her that her silver should have been a gold? The girl who beat her tested positive in another race shortly thereafter.

For me, lubing is all about Bodyglide.

  6. fe-lady says:

I use A&D SOMETIMES after the ride, but never before.

So cool that you got to meet Michellie! And no you are not that short…SHE is pretty TALL! She is really soft spoken and nice-I got to meet her a couple of years ago when she spoke before a sprint tri here.

I am sure the medal will give you the best of luck!!!

And yea for Cheesburger and Fries!

  7. LBTEPA says:

    Michellie is very tall
    You are petite
No idea about the lube etc (but will watch this space asI’ll be ramping up my bike kms very soon)
    GOOD LUCK AT VINEMAN!

  8. I AM SO JEALOUS!!! You’re gonna do awesome at vineman, by the way. I want a total download when you’re done!

  9. also – sportslick, I understand, survives the swim. Also, I also use bodyglide and the Mission anti friction cream. Both are great. Sportslick, I hear, is the beez kneez.

  10. suzee says:

I use ooo la la lube for running (it’s KY warming massage oil, if memory serves) – keeps the blisters and chafing at bay so far! It also gives a nice connection for the heart monitor. And I think it’s cheaper than the sports stuff.

Good luck on the race! Can’t wait for the report.

  11. shelley says:

WOW!!!!! That’s so cool that you met her.

  12. swtrigal says:

I use Assos butter. best product ever but you have to practically sell your bike to buy it!

  13. runner susan says:

I’m short too. Do you have a bike I can borrow?

  14. Laura says:

    Yay for Olympic metals!!

As for lube, I’m also a body glide girl. My tri girls and I just had a discussion about this (and saddles) and we say yes to lube (body glide etc), no to hair! Hope that’s not TMI…..

BTW, if your race is wetsuit MAKE SURE you body glide your NECK!!!! Chafing there lasts forever!

  18. Wow, Laura feels very strongly about her comment…ha!

I’m with body glide and I had actually never heard of the other ones you mentioned. ‘Butt butter’ made me laugh like a middle-schooler!

Good luck at your race!! The medal will surely bring you luck!

  19. Wendy says:

Here’s hopin’ Michellie’s medal brings you some bonus luck out there on the course!

  20. Anonymous says:

That is a great pic with Michellie. Go over 40-year-old broads!

  21. Cliff says:

    21st Century Mom,

Sorry. I don’t use lubrication. I guess i am natural lubricated :P..not that kind (get your mind out of the gutter).

Wow, that’s cool that you gotta hang out with a Michellie Jones. Let’s hope that magic rub off on your race day 🙂

  22. iliketoast says:

Sports shield is the lube of choice for us. Nice to see you hanging out with some Aussies!
